Time to say "good bye"

I hope when you read the title of this blog, you're singing it to the melody of Sarah Brightman and Andrea Bocelli's rendition. Because my emotions are running just as high and low as the octaves of that song.

The last 3 days have been unusual. I've had moments of excitement, fleeting anxiety, sadness, doubt, fear, the list could go on forever. I know that these emotions are all natural to a new stage in life (I experienced the same thing going to France!), yet every time it changes, I find myself surprised. I didn't anticipate feeling as sad as I do...I assumed the excitement of moving to a different country for a year would leave no room for such negative feelings. Well, that's not very realistic is it?

Rather, I've walked around the places I'm so familiar with, looking around at the people I love and know, asking myself, "Is it worth leaving all of this?" I've stared at the kids, watching their individual personalities blossom, questioning, "Am I willing to leave them for a year?" I've sat with my mom in the kitchen with a cup of coffee, observing how our relationship has turned into one of my most meaningful friendships, wondering, "Am I as strong as her?" And although I pause for a moment nervously, wondering if I've made a huge mistake, I know that what I'm about to embark in will be an incomparable experience that will change my life in such a positive way that it is incomprehensible to me now.

All I can do is live the life that God has blessed me with and let all my apprehensions disappear as each day goes by, filled with adventures and new lessons learned.

I've requested that my family make the "good bye" very casual. After all, it isn't permanent. Dad did a great job (he had to leave yesterday on a business trip, so "good byes" happened early), but Mom has been looking a little weepy-eyed today and I'm not looking forward to 8 p.m., when I'm supposed to leave for the airport. I'll let you know how it goes...

In the meantime, here's a picture of some friends saying "farewell"...Korean style. :-)

Bye Bye, America!!
